"BarnBase"

BarnBase is a "geospatial" database of all types of swine producing barns that is being developed by Ontario Pork and the Department of Land Resource Science, University of Guelph. The purpose of the database is to provide the information required to manage a Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) outbreak. From early October 2002, ten field staff will start visiting all known swine barns in Ontario over the period of one year. The database will be private, confidential, and secure.

What we will do:

  • Contact and inform farmers why we are collecting this information
  • Visit the farm and take immediate biosecurity precautions
  • Acquire a geographic coordinate measurement near the barn entrance with GPS*
  • Inquire the farmers name and address, phone, fax, email, etc.
  • Inquire about the type of livestock operation, what livestock species are present, and the potential number of animals at risk.
  • Upon completion, follow additional biosecurity precautions, thank the farmer, and depart to next farm
  • Collect this information and build the BarnBase in a GIS* system
  • The GIS system will be built using a relational database and ESRI ArcGIS.
  • Provide ongoing support to Ontario Pork, including 24hour emergency service to identify barns during an outbreak, etc.

Examples of barns and operations we will visit:

  • Farrow to Finish
  • Farrow to Wean
  • SEW Farrowing
  • SEW Nursery
  • Finishing
  • Isolation/Quarantine Barn
  • Boar Stud / A.I. Unit
  • Assembly Yard/Trucker Yard
  • Sales Barn
  • Other livestock barns (dairy, etc.) with swine
  • ...

This database is the property of Ontario Pork, and will be developed and supported in the Dept. of Land Resource Sci. to assist Ontario Pork and the Ontario producers. The project will be completed in one year. This database will be integrated with Ontario Pork's other databases for the support of the swine industry.
